After having used the EYFS flag set within your observations, the Areas of Concern monitoring screens can be used to help spot any areas that children may require further support in. If you haven’t yet enabled the EYFS flag set, please take a look at this tutorial to see how.
You will need to be logged into the browser version of Tapestry to access these monitoring screens.
There are two Areas of Concern monitoring screens: Group view, and Guided View. In the next two tabs of this tutorial we’ll take a look at each screen separately.
On this tab, we cover how to use the Areas of Concern Group View screen for the EYFS framework.
The Group View screen was designed as the quickest way to assess individual children, groups of children or all children at once. It is also a place where teachers and SLT staff can quickly see if there are any children that there are concerns about in terms of their learning in specific areas.
You can make your judgements on each child in each area of learning based on your knowledge of the child and any evidence you have collected so far.
To access the screen go to Planning & Monitoring > Monitoring and select the EYFS tab. You then select the Group View under Areas of Concern.
The Search box is useful if you are just trying to assess one child in a group or cohort. If you want to filter more specifically, such as by gender, EAL, Key Person etc. then you could use Child Filters.
Judgments against the 7 areas have been split into three categories: Concerns, No Concerns and Review. This is the judgment you will assign for each area for each child, based on your knowledge of the child and the evidence you have collected so far.
From the Totals box at the top of the page you can quickly see the distribution of these judgments for all children that you have selected (or just all children on your account if you haven’t used any filters).
As you can see in this example, of the 4 children in the group selected, there are no concerns except in the areas of Physical Development (PD). No concerns is the default.
You can also filter by each judgement. For example, if you want to see only those children with no concerns in Communication and Language (CL), you could click on the CL No concerns button it will automatically filter those results for you.
Filtering is a helpful feature if you are only inputting judgements for a specific area at this point. If you are sitting down to make judgments on all the areas at once, you can leave the Totals box as it is, and scroll down.
Here you will see all areas for the children, and you can simply apply your judgments to each area by clicking either the Concerns, No Concerns or Review boxes.
Underneath each area you will also see a button for Reflections (only if you have the Reflections feature enabled), Observations, and Timeline.
If you would like to use the Reflections feature to record information on your reasons for judgements made you will need to enable the feature on your account.
A manager can do this from Configuration -> Features -> Reflections and clicking on Enable.
Reflections are just available for staff and you can set staff User Permissions for Reflections as part of enabling this feature, by selecting Staff permissions, once the feature is enabled.
You can click those buttons at any point and it will show you all the Reflections or Observations linked to that specific area for the child.
Here you can see Charlotte has one Reflection linked to Understanding the World (UW). If you click on the count for number of reflections under that area, you can review that reflection to help towards the judgement that you make. You can also Add Reflection from here.
Charlotte also has one Observation linked to Understanding the World (UW). If I click on the count for number of observations under that area, I can review that observation to help towards your judgement on this area.
The Timeline option shows you a chronological order of events for that area of development. Here you can see the Timeline making up the judgement on Charlotte’s achievements in the Understanding the World area of learning.
You can also refer to the relevant reference materials near the bottom of the page. We have provided this as a collection of relevant and useful documents to help inform your judgements.
The final area of the screen provides an option for you to export the data from the Group View screen screen. You can export this screen to PDF or CSV.
There is also an option to change the date range of data showing on this page. This means that you can choose for it to only take into account Reflections and Observations from your Current Assessment Period, from the Past 12 Months or you can choose to include All Available from those Reflections and Observations for those children.
So you have now seen how you can make your judgments on the EYFS Areas of Concern Group View screen.
On this tab, we cover how to use the Areas of Concern Guided View screen for the EYFS framework.
The Guided View screen was designed as the quickest way to assess individual children, groups of children or all children at once. It can assist in picking out children that you may have concerns about in terms of their development.
The Guided View is more detailed than the Group View and takes you through each child and area of development one at a time. This gives you the opportunity to really think about each child and how they are developing in each area.
To access the screen go to Planning & Monitoring > Monitoring and select the EYFS tab. You then select the Guided View under Areas of Concern.
Once you have selected Guided View, Tapestry will show you previous review sessions that have been completed in the last 30 days. Clicking on the sessions, highlighted in blue, will take you to the results of that last review session. Clicking on the New Session button will allow you to start a new review session.
Starting a new session will take you to the page where you can select the children you want to review.
As with the Group View, you can search for a specific child using the search box, or you can use the filters to select a group. If you want to review all children in view, you can use the Select All button.
You can also choose by selecting the box next their name. Once you have chosen all the children you want to review, select Next at the bottom of the page.
The screen that follows is where you can choose the areas that you would like to review in this session. You can choose to select all 7 areas by clicking on Select All, or choose specific ones by selecting the box next to that area. If you want to select other children, clicking on Back will take you to the previous page. Once you are happy with your selections, you can move on by selecting Next.
You will now see the review screen, where you can consider whether you have concerns about the child’s development in that area or not.
The options you have to select are Concerns, No Concerns or Review. If you are already sure of your selection, you can press on the one you would like, and this takes you to the next screen.
If you are not sure yet what selection you should make at this time, you can either choose to skip that area or use the information below this box to help you decide.
If you change your view on whether there are concerns or not, or if you just wish to mark this as for review, click on one of the options (if you have Reflections enabled) and you will be given the option to add a reflection related to your judgement made.
You will also see all the supporting observations that have been flagged in that area for that child. Tapestry will show observations for different assessment periods if there are none for this period.
To view more observations for that child, you can click on View more observations and to export these observations as a PDF file, select Export PDF.
You will also find any Reflections which have been added for that child and flagged in that selected area of learning. (If you do not have Reflections enabled, then this section will not appear on this screen for you).
This also gives you another opportunity to add a new reflection for this child by clicking on Add Reflection and also to export any current reflections as a PDF file by clicking on Export PDF.
If you would like to use the Reflections feature to record information on your reasons for judgements made, Reflections will need to be enabled on your account.
The Reflections feature can be enabled by a manager on the account from the Configuration -> Features -> Reflections and clicking on Enable.
Reflections are just available for staff and you can set staff User Permissions for Reflections as part of enabling this feature, by selecting Staff permissions, once the feature is enabled.
Relevant reference materials are also available for you to refer to on this page and these are viewable if you scroll down the page.
If you have made any changes and have decided to click on Concerns, No concerns or Review for this child for this area of learning, you can just select Go as shown below next to the child’s name to save the changes.
Once you have made your selection, and completed all the areas you have chosen to review, you will be taken to a filtered Group View screen. This will just show the children you have just assessed in those areas, and the selection made. If you have changed your mind, or realise that you have made a mistake, you can update the selection here too.
If you would like to go back to viewing all children on this screen, select Return to viewing all children.
And that’s it! You now know how to review and make your judgments on the EYFS Areas of Concern Guided View screen.
