Hashtags are a quick way to organise and find posts in Tapestry. In this tutorial we’ll look at adding hashtags, and how to find tagged posts, using Observations as the example; but hashtags can be used within the notes field across Observations, Memos, Activities, and Reflections, so that related posts are easy to locate later.

About hashtags

A hashtag must begin with the # symbol and should not include spaces. For example, you could use #CI for Child Initiated or #painting for observations that include painting.

You can place a hashtag anywhere in the main text box: at the start, in the middle of a sentence, or at the end. Capital letters do not matter, but the spelling does need to stay the same each time you use the tag. For example, #MakingRelationships will work, but #Making Relationships will not because it contains a space.

Quick tips

  • Use short, memorable hashtags so that they are easy for staff to apply consistently.
  • Agree common spellings in advance for frequently used tags.
  • Avoid spaces in hashtags; combine words instead, such as #OutdoorLearning.
  • Use the filters or clickable hashtag links whenever you need to quickly find related posts.

Adding hashtags

When creating an observation in the browser or app, enter your hashtag in the notes section or, if enabled, in the additional information field.

After the observation has been saved any hashtag in the observation will appear as a blue clickable link.

Select the blue hashtag link to open a list of all other observations that use the same hashtag.

You can also search for specific hashtags by using the page filters on the observations tab.

To see how often each staff member has used a particular hashtag (within Observations only), go to the staff observations count screen. You can find this from Planning & Monitoring → Monitoring → General.
