How to choose the best devices for educational software

  • February 24, 2025

Disclaimer: Recommendations for specific devices are just our opinion. If you feel differently please feel free to let us know! You can contact us with any suggestions by emailing customer.service@eyfs.info.

In this article we’ll go over any requirements you should consider before purchasing devices to use with Tapestry, our device recommendations, and the pros and cons of Android & iOS devices.

Internet Connection

One of the most important requirements for Tapestry is a stable internet connection. If you are using 3G or your WIFI speed is a bit slow, you may find this interferes with your experience using Tapestry e.g. media may take a while to upload.

You can find your internet connection upload and download speeds by testing your connection.

Operating System

Another requirement is that the operating system on your device is modern enough to be compatible with the apps (iOS, Android or Fire). Our current minimum requirements are:

  • iOS 15.6 and above for Apple devices
  • Android 8 and above for Android devices
  • OS 7 and above on a 9th generation or newer tablet for Amazon Fire devices
Important note about Amazon Fire devices:
  • Devices running OS 7 on 9th–11th generation hardware can install the app, but will experience much slower performance due to limited memory.
  • We don’t recommend Amazon Fire devices due to their consistently limited performance. However, if you choose to use one, we strongly advise selecting a 12th generation device (or newer) running Fire OS 8 or above for the best possible experience.

Dropping support for older versions of the various operating systems and focusing on newer versions (which may contain vital security updates) is necessary to ensure our apps are as secure as possible and provide you with the best user experience.

If you are buying a new device, do make sure it has the latest version of the relevant operating system and that its supplier will provide operating system updates for as long as you want the device to last.

IT Support

Other than the above, the most important thing to do when choosing a device/s to use in your school or setting(s) is making sure it’s supported by your IT team (if you have one) and will be kept up to date by the manufacturer of the device.

If you are lucky enough to have an IT support team, a friend or family member who can help out, or your own expertise, choose a device that they (or you) prefer and know. If you do get on well with your smartphone, it may be worth looking to see if that manufacturer also makes tablet devices you can use.

If there isn’t anyone at your setting who has any IT expertise, you might want to consider going outside the setting for help. The intention of Tapestry is to make your life easier, but having computers and networks that you can’t use could cause a lot of frustration, so it is important to know you can get help with them if you need it.

Once you have a device in mind that you’ll be confident setting up and using, try and get something that is also supported by the company that makes it. In particular, you want a company that provides regular software updates to fix security flaws and bugs. That means avoiding devices where they don’t have a website that provides you at least some support information.

Tablets vs Phones

We know that many of the parents and other relatives on Tapestry are using the app via their smartphones, but there are a few factors you might want to consider before deciding whether to purchase smartphones or tablets:

  • Size of the screen – if the devices are just for taking photos/videos and adding them to observations then this might not make too much difference but if you want to use more of the functionality available on Tapestry you might find a larger screen easier for viewing different screens.
  • The safeguarding implications of using smartphones instead of tablet devices – if you are thinking about using smartphones will they have SIM cards in? If so, how will you lock these down?

Please note that the cost of the recommended devices below are correct as of February 2026.

A low regret choice

A low regret choice is an iPad, bought directly from an Apple store. iPads tend to be a safe choice as the Apple operating system is very stable and if bought directly from Apple, they can assist if you do experience any problems with a device.

These are quite expensive though – their cheapest option is currently a WiFi only, 128GB iPad 11th Generation for £329.

Alternatively, you can consider a refurbished device. For example, Apple’s Refurbished iPad 9 (64GB) costs around £199, supports iOS 16, and comes with a full Apple warranty.

A budget choice

If, like many early years settings, you have quite a tight budget then one option would be a Samsung Galaxy Tab A11.

We have several of these in the office so we know they are compatible, and we are able to test how updates to our app and to the tablet’s operating system affect how Tapestry works on it. We have found that the Tapestry app works well on them, and we have not encountered any specific issues with this device type.

You may find they are more reasonably priced compared to other devices. The Galaxy Tab A11 is currently available on Amazon for £138, or directly from Samsung for £149.

Android minimum requirements

The minimum operating system requirement for Android is:

  • Android 8 or above
  • Amazon Fire 7 or above

Important note about Amazon Fire devices:
  • Devices running OS 7 on 9th–11th generation hardware can install the app, but will experience much slower performance due to limited memory.
  • We don’t recommend Amazon Fire devices due to their consistently limited performance. However, if you choose to use one, we strongly advise selecting a 12th generation device (or newer) running Fire OS 8 or above for the best possible experience.

These requirements affect both the app and the browser version of Tapestry running on an Android device.

Before purchasing a new device, please always check that if not already running on the minimum requirement, it can be updated.

Android tablets

Strengths
  • Massive variety – you can usually find an Android device that will suit your budget or other specific requirements. While there are genuine bargains out there, device performance will usually be related to the price you pay.
Weaknesses
  • Massive variety – our records show that our users connect with more than 1000 different models of Android device. They should all work in the same way, but in practice they are subtly different. It is unlikely we will have tested on exactly the same device as you which can make it harder for us to reproduce exact steps or provide device instructions.
  • Manufacturers vary in how much support they provide with many never providing a software update.
  • Less secure than iOS, particularly models that aren’t running the latest version of Android.

iOS minimum requirements

The minimum operating system requirement for iOS is:

  • IOS 15.6 or above

These requirements affect both the app and the browser version of Tapestry running on an Apple device.

Before purchasing a new device, please always check that if not already running on the minimum requirement, it can be updated.

iOS tablets

Strengths

  • The devices themselves are reliable and generally considered easy to use.
  • Apple provide good support (both for you, and for us, as app developers). In particular, they usually provide software updates for four years or so.
  • They take security seriously (most of this is invisible to you, but they have a lot of features that make it easier for the Tapestry app to be secure).
  • There aren’t too many models, so it is quite likely we can test Tapestry on a device that is very similar to the one you use.

Weaknesses

  • As of October 2025, the cheapest device currently available is around £329
  • Once Apple has stopped supporting a device, we have to stop supporting it pretty quickly as well – it is much harder to test older versions of iOS than it is on older versions of Android.
