The Cherry Garden Monitoring Screen: A Complete Solution for Reflecting on Progress & Enhancing Provision

A perfect accompaniment

Thousands of settings or schools use the Cherry Garden framework to support their assessment of children working below national curriculum levels, and there is now a purpose built screen which provides the opportunity to effectively monitor progress and engagement.

The Cherry Garden Monitoring screen has been created to allow educators and leaders to make judgements about the way that their children engage with their provision across the various curriculum areas. Observations that contain Cherry Garden assessments are automatically pulled through to the screen to provide additional information when considering engagement as well as progress.

Most importantly, where concerns have been highlighted, users are able to create ‘Reflections’ that are specifically linked to the judgements. If, for example, Mathematical Development had been highlighted as a ‘Concern’ for a particular child, the Reflection created in response might provide a space for ideas for provision adjustments over the coming weeks.

Importantly, the Reflection is a collaborative space for discussion of appropriate tweaks. The ideal scenario would be that once actioned, the judgement could return to ‘No Concerns’ as the child is now accessing the provision as we would hope and therefore making progress.

Those in leadership positions can make use of the handy summary at the top of the page. The information in this space provides the opportunity to investigate patterns of concerns to support whole setting or school improvements. If, for example, there seems to be a pattern of concerns linked to Physical Development, there may need to be some more significant enhancements across the board.

Stephen worked in mainstream for the first four years of his career before moving to Cherry Garden School in London where he was Early Years lead and Deputy Headteacher. Cherry Garden is a school for children with severe and complex support needs, and Stephen was based there for 11 years before joining the FSF in September 2019 as our SEND Advisor. He now lives in the North East where he visits nurseries and schools to offer free support, and he shares the Branch Maps that he worked on developing at Cherry Garden. These are now part of the Tapestry assessment system.
